Mortal Kombat 2021 Sonya Blade actress Jessica McNamee did her homework for the role, watching YouTube videos to get into her character.
Mortal combatJessica McNamee, who will play Sonya Blade in the reboot, watched YouTube videos to prepare for her role. A member of Earthrealm’s outside world investigative agency, Sonya Blade is a formidable fighter and an original character from the first Mortal combat video game. Sonya Blade is just one of many iconic fighters who will appear in the upcoming reboot, the first Mortal combat movie since the failed 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
Besides Sonya, everyone from Kano and Jax to Sub-Zero and Liu Kang will fight in the tournament that will determine the fate of the world. Lewis Tan will also be introduced as Cole Young, a new character from the Mortal combat universe with the past linked to the mythology surrounding the events of the film. All of the cast trained vigorously to prepare for their roles in the film, but McNamee revealed his unique approach to doing his homework.
The actress tells Collider that she started by Google searching for the character to find out about her history in games. This led her to an internet rabbit hole in the Mortal combat fandom, eventually taking her to YouTube, where she studied video game people to get a feel for her character’s fighting style. This not only helped her understand her character better, but also allowed her to learn more about the world she would enter.
Actually, I just searched for Sonya Blade on Google. I did all this reading, I entered the fandom. I mean, it’s endless. And then I found it really helpful for me to watch YouTube’s of people playing the game, and I had a real eye on what was going on and learned more about the world.
The first opinions for Mortal combat hailed the film’s violence as deliciously fun, which matches the video games themselves. Adapting video games has proven to be a particularly tricky task, with the writers and directors having the task of honoring the source material while trying to make the film as enjoyable as possible for as large an audience as possible. The jury is still largely absent Mortal combat; the film has been released internationally, but American fans are eager to see if the film can meet their expectations.
McNamee’s study tactic certainly shows the dedication actors have shown to precisely tailor their video game counterparts. When Sonya Blade makes her next screen appearance, it will be the first time in 25 years that she and many other characters will have live-action counterparts. Mortal combat has a lot going for it in terms of fan expectations and wider reception, but it’s safe to say that the franchise certainly seems to be in good hands all around.
