Discord tests Watch Together, letting you watch YouTube videos with friends

Discord may no longer have Rhythm, but you’ll be able to watch together soon.

Just days after a popular third-party Discord plugin was to close through YouTube, Discord is taking matters into its own hands.

The popular chat service in the gaming community has started testing a new feature called Watch Together, which allows Discord users to watch YouTube videos in sync with each other on their servers.

As The edge points out, Discord already tested something similar last year before apparently putting the feature on the back burner.

It looks like the end of a third-party plugin has sparked a renewed interest in Discord releasing this feature.

Earlier this month, YouTube’s parent company Google sent a cease and desist letter to the owner of a beloved third-party Discord plugin called Rythm. The plugin allowed Discord users to stream audio from YouTube or any other link directly into the service’s voice chat system.

With Rythm, users could listen to music uploaded to YouTube with their friends on Discord and avoid the usual YouTube ads. It’s no surprise that Google ultimately had an issue with its usage, as it violates the company’s terms of service. Even the founder of Rythm said they expected it will eventually be closed.

So, with the discontinuation of Rythm and another popular Discord music plugin called Groovy, it looks like Discord is trying to fill the void.

Watch Together differs from these apps. It’s more in line with Discord’s screen sharing feature, with the YouTube video playing on screen instead of just pumping the audio through voice chat.

Additionally, if you watch a YouTube video, you will see YouTube ads.

Discord will be rolling out the Watch Together beta to more servers in the coming weeks. The current plan is for Watch Together to be fully rolled out to all Discord users by the end of October.
