On September 10, Amazon Music Originals continued to stack their exclusive Americana playlist, aptly titled brush, with a new single from Katie Pruitt and an upcoming single from Tré Burt (released September 17th). Pruitt’s contribution comes via a reimagining of Lucinda Williams’ nostalgic “Something About What Happens When We Talk”, and Burt will share a new take on her single “Solo”.
“It was a great experience coming back to ‘Solo’,” says Burt. “I think I always heard it in my head like a movie drama so it was really cool to hear Andrija [Tokic] approach that way. I decided to take my vocal performance a little more towards soul-balladry territory to match the new intensity of this version. I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Now re-recorded and will soon find a permanent home on Brushland, “Solo” will reside along with dozens of other artist tracks that epitomize the rustic and touching Camp Americana. Raising the curtain on this playlist, American Songwriter delved into this playlist selection process with Amazon Music Senior Curator Emily Cohen.
“Brushland is our flagship Americana playlist, but it’s also a center-left country music playlist,” Cohen told American Songwriter. “Obviously, Americana can be a broad term, it encompasses so much American music in general. Roots, blues, gospel, country — all of that and in between. I think there are some really amazing artists creating music in this space, and being able to organize a list with them has been really rewarding.
“It’s my job to play hits and play music that our clients really love, but also to introduce them to artists and songs that we think they’ll love too,” Cohen continues. “It’s a real joy to discover new artists, to program new artists, to nurture them in our department, to find unique ways to work with them and to give them a creative outlet to do something different, potentially. , of what they have done before. “
By integrating these new artists into established fan favorites, Brushland is an unrivaled playlist. When it came time to select and work with Pruitt and Burt on their Amazon Originals, Cohen explained that it just made sense for two artists to bring them to Brushland.
“The first time I heard [Pruitt’s ‘Something About What Happens When We Talk’] I remember being Chris on our team and thinking to myself, “Man, everything Katie does, every performance she’s done, or even her original music is so fantastic,” Cohen says. “I think with Trey he almost gives me like a new Dylan vibe, in a way. I just think he’s a really wonderful songwriter and I loved his most recent project.
Chris Graham, senior director of artist relations for Amazon Music, also spoke about Brushland’s recent growth. “We’re excited to be able to add two new Amazon Original tracks to the growing catalog of Americana and Folk songs. Katie and Tre both delivered unique takes, with Katie covering Lucinda [Williams] and Tre reinventing his song ‘Solo’ with producer Andrija Tokic to include a Billy Contreras string arrangement, so we can’t wait for customers to hear them, ”says Graham.
Overall, Cohen has a plethora of experiences to draw from when it comes to creating and maintaining outstanding playlists like this. In 2020, Cohen was instrumental in the development of Amazon Music’s Breakthrough playlist, which advocates for emerging artists and positions them to break into mainstream music. Cohen supported Gabby Barrett as one of the first groundbreaking artists and continues to support artists through Amazon Music’s Launchpad and Amazon Music’s Women’s History Month programming. Cohen also personally supports those on his playlists which include other artists like Morgan Wade, John Mayer, Kacey Musgraves, and Drake (to name a few).
In addition to his experience as a curator, Cohen explains that Amazon Music is in a unique position to provide listeners with a holistic approach to music. With Amazon’s Alexa feature and the partnership with Twitch (which has seen live broadcasts with industry giants like Keith Urban, Eric Church, and Dolly Parton), Amazon Music is lighting the stage for some of the most must-have music. today.
